Accelerated Resolution Therapy
About Accelerated Resolution
Therapy Utah (ART)
Accelerated Resolution Therapy Utah (ART) is a unique, creative form of therapy that utilizes bilateral stimulation in the form of eye movements, combined with Gestalt, Psychodynamic therapy and Guided Imagery to guide Clients in processing out negative memories/images and replacing them with positive images. True to its name, it is an accelerated form of therapy that brings quick resolution to the trauma/problems Client’s have been struggling to heal from; depending on the complexity of the case, some Client’s have found resolution in as quick as one session.
Burnett Counseling’s approach to Accelerated Resolution Therapy Utah is guided by a client-centered therapeutic approach. The process begins with assessment and treatment planning, and includes education on the process of ART, and may include—depending on the client—teaching mindfulness and other tools that can be found helpful in navigating life through and post therapy.
ART as an experience is a therapist-guided, client-driven, creative process. The therapist will give instructions and the client will decide how things go while participating in bilateral stimulation in the form of eye movements, alternating focusing between traumatic memory and body sensations. Minimal verbal communication is needed during Accelerated Resolution Therapy Utah, and clients are not required to talk about their trauma. Because of this, it is very important to honestly communicate with the therapist about anything difficult or negative that may come up, or if the client feels stuck, so the therapist can guide the client on where to go from there in a healing/helpful direction.
Although it can be difficult to bring up traumatic/unwanted images or memories, those that participate in ART are able to see how quickly the difficult body sensations that accompany the memories, as well as the memories themselves are able to transform.
ART is often best known for treating first responders, combat veterans, and those suffering from sexual trauma or post traumatic stress. ART has been known to help many other challenges as well and can be helpful in working through/dealing with mental health problems, such as OCD, Anxiety, Depression, Dyslexia, Eating Disorders, and debilitating fear. As a therapist, Kimberly Burnett has witnessed clients strengthen their confidence and be able to reach goals that they have felt were inaccessible to them.

True to its name, it is an accelerated form of therapy that brings quick resolution to the trauma/problems that clients have been struggling to heal from.
The therapist follows a specific protocol to guide the client through a process using gestalt, psychodynamic therapy and guided imagery to process out negative memories/images and replace them with positive. The client will participate in bilateral stimulation in the form of eye movements while thinking of the memory as though watching a movie in their mind; at the end of “watching” their scene, they process the physical sensations in their body. This way they are working through not only their remembered memory—desensitizing the difficult parts—they are also desensitizing the stored body memory.
After the processing they get a chance to change the way the memory is stored in their brain and it is their choice how they want that to be; sessions end with the clients feeling at peace, often with a smile on their face and satisfied, and although they remember the event, it is no longer so disturbing. ART has a saying “keep the knowledge, lose the pain”, people that participate in ART keep the essential knowledge, they just lose the pain associated.
